Musk Deer

Species:

Himalayan musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster)
Siberian musk deer (Moschus moschiferus)
Dwarf musk deer (Moschus brezovskii)
Black musk deer (Moschus fuscus)

Habitat:

Wet and mountainous forest, 2,000-4,000m altitude

Found in:

Siberia, Korea, the Himalayas, northern China, and northern Mongolia

Average statistics:

11-17kg, 50-60cm high, 85-100cm in length

Distinguishing features:

Very long upper canines of adult males and neither sex have antlers, a musk gland in the genital region of males

Diet:

Vegetarian: eats leaves, grasses, moss, lichens, shoots, twigs

Gestation period:

6 months

Life expectancy:

12-20 years

Threats:

Habitat loss, hunted as prey by yellow-throated marten, fox, wolf, lynx, tiger, bear, and by humans who use the deer’s gland for Traditional Chinese Medicines or homeopathy

300,000
