Endangered species are made into a wide range of different products, from clothing and ornamental items to skins and furs. Much of this is illegal and is threatening the survival of many species. For example:
- Shahtoosh shawls are made from the wool of the endangered Tibetan antelope and the animals have to be killed and skinned to obtain the wool.
- Tortoiseshell comes from the shells of sea turtles and is made into highly polished jewellery, combs, boxes and other decorative items.
- Elephants continue to be killed illegally to supply our markets with a wide range of ivory ornaments, jewellery and other items.
- The skins and stuffed specimens of endangered species, such as big cats and bears, continue to be found on sale in London.
